COURSE DESCRIPTION:
In this course, Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, and Speech-Language Pathologists will explore the implications of legal versus medical capacity, while discussing legal documents to consider as part of a patient’s needs. We will also review the ethical implications of capacity determinations and documents presented to clinicians.
OBJECTIVES:
1) Master an understanding of the difference between medical and legal capacity.
2) Gain a familiarity with estate planning documents, including medical powers of attorney, medical directives, and guardianships.
3) Become knowledgeable of ethical implications of decisions made by the practitioner and family as capacity is questioned with documents both in place and not in place.
